Instagram 101.1

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Processed with VSCOcam with g1 presetAs the start of a new series I thought it’d be fun to share a recent Instagram photo and tell you how it was made…

I took this shot yesterday. We drove out of London to visit the RHS Garden Hyde Hall – plentiful with flowers and a play area for Gus. I shot on my Pen E-PL7 with a 45mm lens. I always select my focal point (I never have it set to centre automatically) and to optimise blur potential I had the aperture wide open at 1.8 and exposure at 0.7 – it was very bright! I shot on square format which is super useful for Instagram.

Importing on my phone, I edited on VSCO with the G1 filter at max (I usually dial down but on this occasion I wanted max dreaminess). Before applying the filter I always play around with the editing tools – lightening the exposure, sharpening, desaturating (quite a lot on this one as it my want right now!), softening highlights and upping the contrast.

I then check how it will look in my gallery by previewing in my VSCO grid gallery. Pretty obsessive, I know, but it means if a photo doesn’t sit right composition or colourwise you can decide on it before publishing.

  1. Really enjoyed this post – VSCO really is the hero of the iPhone editing app world (my go to is S2) I steer clear of Instagram filters!

Glad I’m not the only one who gets a bit obsessive with how pictures look on my grid! x

    1. Haha yes, thankfully we’re not the only ones! Yes, likes the S’s too and I spend a lot of time in the A series… 🙂 xx
