A Mini Guide To My Favourite Finds | New York

NewYork_ButchersDaughter_01

A few months on, granted, I have for you, a mini guide to the places I loved best while in New York – if you missed my first post, 5 Things To Do In New York, check it out! In this post, I bring you cafés, an ice-cream parlour, fashion boutiques, cool jewellery and more; all of which I stumbled upon while walking about or sought out, camera in hand…

The Butcher’s Daughter

NewYork_ButchersDaughter_04

First up was my very first New York café experience. The Butcher’s Daughter in Nolita, which I went to catch with my gorgeous girl Michele (@kissser – keep an eye out for her this April modelling and looking steamin’ hot in Boden’s new Icons collection). It was everything I wanted and more! Exposed brickwork, industrial paint-peeling stools with a great coffee menu (they have all the milks!) and a delicious avo on toast. What more do you want, huh?

Warm

NewYork_Warm_03Just a few streets away from The Butcher’s Daughter is amazing lifestyle and fashion boutique Warm. I was in heaven right away, immediately spotting the awesome Rachel Comey jeans in the shop window and MiH stocked inside. I fell all over gorgeous jewellery designer Manon, and bought a little snake earring (love how these are sold separately, mine is silver!). Only afterwards did I discover Manon is a friend of Michele’s – weird, huh?

Creatures of Comfort

NewYork_CoC_01Gorgeous boutique, Creatures of Comfort was another place I’d been recommended by a denim designer friend. I immediately zoned in on the hard-to-get Mansur Gavriels and drooled over everything else, including Acne, Falke and a whole load I didn’t know…. Not cheap, but all super covetable. And oh, this own-label bag.

Illesteva

NewYork_Illesteva_01Gah, I couldn’t not go in. Illesteva does the most incredible sunglasses designs and it felt pretty special seeing them all lined up in their very own shop in Soho. Cue fun trying on session…

Le Labo

NewYork_LeLabo_06Silly really, as I should have known about Le Labo (it’s stocked in Liberty) and now I see it popping up on Instagram all the time. But actually I’m glad I didn’t, as the discovery was was such a sensory pleasure. Walking down Elizabeth Street, where you could basically spend half a day (and all your bank account) was magnetically  drawn to the gorgeous boutique with its long counter, walls lined ever so neatly with brown-glass bottles, scents and delicious candles. I had no space whatsoever in my luggage, but I bought a La Figue candle, personalised label stamped right in front of me. The whole experience was just too good!

Biagi

NewYork_Biagi_02

Skipping merrily out of Le Labo, just a couple doors down was this rather inviting looking ice-cream parlour, Biagi. My last day in New York and I’d yet to indulge in some proper gelato Italo-Brazilian style. The time was right. Cue huge dollops of chocolate ice-cream, which I devoured in a still jet-lagged haze (three days in New York is not optimal for ever actually feeling non-lagged) giving me the energy to march on… So glad I did!

Love Adorned

NewYork_LoveAdorned_01This was the street that kept on giving. So many amazing looking little boutiques as I wondered west in my ice-cream daze. But the one that really hauled me in in intoxicated delight was jewellery and lifestyle store Love Adorned. Now, I wasn’t actually allowed to snap these pictures, so don’t mention it. I got quite the dressing down when paying for my little bracelet. I could have spent a lot more time in here, and this is definitely one place I will be visiting again. They stocked my new discovery Manon, was so tempted to the moon studs and now totally regretting it, doh…

Reformation

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIconicly cool, limited edition sunstainably-made and vintage clothes is what you’ll find at at Reformation, over on the Lower East Side. I was running out of time as I had to make it back across the city to the Conrad catch my cab to airport, but I popped in, and looked aghast at all the things I wanted to buy, none of which I did as I had no, as mentioned earlier, space in my luggage. Well, apart from a cute little scarf and tiny card purse…

El Rey

My last stop, I just had to fit in, was El Rey’s, because, well, their Instagram. They served me up so quick, my food was in a to-go dish; I think they thought I was in a New Yorker-rushing-out-the-door kinda rush. It was yum, and just what I needed to charge back through town via Chinatown in time…!

  2. NYC is also one of my favorite cities in the world. I cannot wait to go back. Once I’m done with my latest venture into computer software, I’ll make sure to plan my trip there. New York, here I come!

  3. Wonderful post and fantastic pictures as always, Julia. Can I ask if you ever use filters when editing your photography? I’m really torn as to whether I should be using filters or not, or should just stick to tweaking exposure, saturation etc.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    1. Thankyou! Yes, I always do all the regular stuff first (exposure, contrast, saturation) in Lightroom. And then in Photoshop, with fresh eyes I resize and apply a filter but usually quite faded (depending on the pic) – it kind of just exaggerates what I’ve already done if that makes sense… I do the same for my insta – I do use a filter, but dialled down, so sparingly… Just go with your gut and what you like 🙂
