How To Lay a Christmas Table

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATable styling hasn’t always been my strongest point – and neither are traditional Christmas colours and decorations! – but this year I really wanted to make something of our Christmas table, so I teamed up with Houseology to create something a bit different…

[ezcol_1half]My goal was to achieve something crisp and minimal but still with a touch of festivity about it. Using our all-white kitchen table (also from Houseology) as the starting point here’s how I went about it. First up, I decided on a colour palette. I decided white, slate and copper would create the framework, accented by green and orange. A table really comes to life for me with plants, so in addition to the stunning wreath – I popped a candle in the middle like we used to do in Denmark – I added pussy willow and instead of traditional red berries went for orange and white ‘snow’ ones. NB. Not to be eaten, I popped them in the bowls solely for decorative purposes, and my guests Gus & Echo charaded perfectly![/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]The overall aesthetic being so clean with the white plates and surface, I though the earthy texture of slate was the perfect contrast; while the mottled surface of the copper tray and intricate cut-outs of the Tom Dixon tea light holders provided texture; lighting candles kicks in about 4pm in my house now, it brings a room and the evenings alive for me, especially during winter’s grey days. I also love napkin rings and thought this set of four was really fun, each member of the family gets to choose which is theirs! Tumblers and a carafe sticking to the colour palette choices – deciding colours beforehand makes decision-making so much easier and streamlined – fit in just perfectly as key table pointers. My final touch was to introduce some a hint of frosty blue with this beautiful ceramic vase. I couldn’t resist pairing it with the orange berries!

  1. I absolutely love this set up. The colors you have chosen as well as the different materials are just my thing! I’m definitely not into typical Christmas set-ups with a lot of red, gold, etc. but your table might be just what I will end up doing this Christmas!
