Summer Specs

Spectacle wearers will know exactly how close a relationship you can develop with your frames, how they can become an extension of you and how integral to your life they are for the basics; y’know, greeting people from a distance, identifying loved ones in a crowd, catching the right train or plane…

I’ve been lucky in that I’ve had a pretty steady prescription since my early teens, took to lenses quite well and have swapped in lenses and frames during the week quite comfortably. I do however, treat my frames quite appallingly and my longterm recent pair suffer from scratches and loose arms (so the frames repeatedly slide down my nose!) and I’ve just lived with that. To the point that friends tut-tut me and tell me off for placing my glasses lenses facing down and righting them! The reason I haven’t changed them to date though is that I’ve been terrified of not finding a pair I like, or that suit me. My old battered Rayban tortoiseshell frames were certainly the only pair in the world that could ever suit me! And also lenses are expensive to replace…
A year ago, my prescription changed (bizarrely can improve as you get older!) and in these last few weeks it’s happened again. So I went for an eye test and to check out some new frames at Ollie Quinn, the Spitalfields branch. I was quite taken by the mainly tortoiseshell acetate frames (just the kind I like!) and had a try-on session. Didn’t take long to find the pair – an even nicer version of my old battered ones. Often I wear my lenses when I have to be ‘on’ for blog stuff and meetings, but these felt zingy enough to wear out to anything! What’s really amazing though is the price, an all inclusive eye test, lenses and frames for £98 which as specs wearers will know is a total bargain. Super impressed, already eyeing up some prescription sunnies
