There was some fashion piece opining how suede is the new leather now that leather has been appropriated by everyone conceivable beyond the rock poets…
That’ll include me then! Either way, I’m happy to be welcoming suede goodness back. If feeling a tad remorseful that I had forgotten all about it and also that you can’t wear it in the rain, but life must go on. Suede featured quite heavily in my teenage years after I managed to conceive a tailor-made shirt-jacket (much in the style of this two-tone denim one I’m wearing here) when my parents lived in Mumbai (or Bombay as it was back then). “A shirt that’s more like a jacket, please.” Well, here you have a plethora of old vintage suede jackets that are more like a skirt having been at the hands of the Beyond Retro Label design team.
“You mean there’s more than one of them!?” asked Charlotte, one of the Topshop writers yesterday at our LFW production meeting, who had fallen hard for the mini cuteness. Yep, all in different colours, depending on the jackets up-cycled and re-worked. A-lined and popper-button based on a Beyond Retro archive piece and £38 a pop in case you’re wondering whether it’s time for a little suede reappraisal a la Saint Laurent, Chloe, Chanel et al SS15.
Being winter still, I located the one pair of decent opaques I have in my sock drawer and reached (as I find myself doing most days in a week) for my trusty grey roll-neck. This piece is brilliant on two levels – it falls perfectly and the slit on each sides is great for casually tucking in the front bit but leaving the back bit hanging, if you feel like covering your tootsy (70s refs all over the place here #sorrynotsorry). Didn’t want to get too colour-crazy so went for black for everything else. I think the leather jacket is a good way to give retro-looking piece a bit of a modern edge. Don’t you?
Right, we’re off for a weekend away! Happy V-word day, peeps!
