The Maxi Coat

HoliGlobal2So the good news is that in amongst the head-splitting madness of moving house the night before London Fashion Week, my trend forecasting head (for what it’s worth!) is still fully on and this autumn I’m thinking it’s all about the maxi coat…

I didn’t even realise this as I climbed the stairs to visit the lovely New Zealand-born but London-based Leah Rodrigues, founder of the just launched Holi Global. Aside from the fact I was completely proven wrong about whether I could carry off the length (thinking it would drown me – the softness of the fabric means it clings and drapes beautifully to your shoulders, flattering your shape and not disguising it) I was totally taken by Leah’s dynamic personality and pragmatism. An amazing story of setting up a small factory in Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia providing long-term training and work for women in the local community who have gone through various charity-operated sewing projects (read more here).

I’ve never tried on a coat like this before (I’m wearing a size 8 btw) and I must say with its llama/cashmere wool mix and silk lining, it’s something quite special. With just four designs in the AW15 collection and a considered palette it was still hard to choose (each try was so impressive in its fit) but in the end the Sliced Kimono in grey felt just right. Light but warm it’s perfect as we enter autumn but more importantly it is hitting the maxi coat head on the nail (ok, a true maxi coat should reach the ground I suppose, but who does that? This is real life, please!). And I love glimpsing my reflection and seeing the length catch the wind and fly behind me. Something so invigorating and a little bit Matrix about it!

With comfort levels at a high – it’s so gorgeous soft and fleecy and just moulds to you and so light! –I’ve found myself reaching for it again and again, for everything to nursery run trips to popping into town to check out London Design Week. Perfect match for layering over the perfect boyfriend jumper (need this in other colours!), torn skinnies and trainers. And how well are all the tonal shades working with the brown leather? This is most def an on repeat outfit.

Pop on over to Holi Global and take a peek, this is your luxe maxi for the autumn sorted!
