Hit The High Road

The drive to the Isle of Skye is something I’ve done a few times over since a teen – my husband grew up there (we first visited as teenagers – we met at school, can you believe it!) – and now make the trip a couple times a year, trying to fit in a summer visit as well as the winter one!

[ezcol_1half]Summer in the Highlands is pretty much paradise as both locals and visitors will tell you – if you hit the right day, or even the right time of day. Notorious for its changeable nature, this played out typically as we arrived to a super sunny Inverness airport, jumped with the joys into our hire car only to find the mists upon us the closer we got to Skye – not known as the Misty Isle for nothing! But if you’re lucky enough to experience a sunny island day you may never want to leave – danger danger! [/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]Needless to say an extra layer (or two!) never go amiss in the Highlands even if you are the midst of summer! And as I’m already feeling the September vibes and donning a knit every opportunity I get, this grey rollneck was the perfect oversized piece – slouchy and boyfriend boxy  greatlooking over jeans. And a light feather down quilted jacket (in full Barbour motorcycle heritage style) is just the thing to sling over shoulders while wondering down wooded pathways to see what is to be seen.[/ezcol_1half_end]

YOU TAKE THE HIGH ROAD…

[ezcol_3quarter]There are a couple of routes you can take to Skye – more or less the high road or the low road – both utterly scenic and jaw-droopingly beautiful whatever the weather. We try to keep stops to a minimum so we can keep the drive within two and a half hours. Of course, there is the occasional photo stop! Expect at the very least sun, rain, rainbows all on the same day. Though don’t stay outside too late, as the midges will get you![/ezcol_3quarter] [ezcol_1quarter_end][/ezcol_1quarter_end]

THE PERFECT B&B

[ezcol_1quarter][/ezcol_1quarter] [ezcol_3quarter_end]The glistening lochs, high peaks, the tiny cottages, scattering of sheep and horses makes the road trip kind of life enhancing and one I couldn’t recommend more! We stayed with my husband’s folks in Sleat but in the nearby Adrvasar our friends have a fabulous little B&B Bracken Brae should you ever feel like making the trip – and they’ve just opened two gorgeous new rooms with the most stunning views![/ezcol_3quarter_end]

THE MEMORIES THAT MATTER

[ezcol_3quarter]And it’s such a treat to see the rather slow Kyle-bound train chuffing along beside you on the old railway track. You’ll also encounter the bikers, the cyclist, the caravaners and the canoeists and it’s great fun trying to working where they’re headed and why… We each have our own story and memories, let’s keep on making them![/ezcol_3quarter] [ezcol_1quarter_end][/ezcol_1quarter_end]
