New Season Stripes | Layering & Tucking

I have a longterm softspot for Wallis, being one of those shops I could easily nip into during my lunch break or after work when I did my first proper London job (in book publishing!) back in the ahem, early 2000s…

My purchases were always focussed on something I could wear out at the weekend, usually a top, to make my usual ensemble feel a bit fresher. A wardrobe brightener. So I thought it would be fun to pay homage to my old shopping ways and pull in a Wallis top to brighten up my regular look, proving that the old jeans, trainers and faux jacket have loads of room for some new season stripes.

There is no argument to be had with the Breton stripe reigning supreme, pretty much through the decades now, and we all have at least one of these in our wardrobes for easy minimal styling with plain block colours. But how about something vertical and in differing widths? Recent fashion weeks tend to blur for me, but I know playing around with stripes (big, fat, mixed up) is something that has been filtering through…

This top is actually a pretty peplum top. I’ve kind of adapted it to my own purposes, using it as a tuck at the front (this is where a statement belt buckle comes in – can’t quite bring myself to fall into the Gucci logo quicksand tho, but I’ll borrow yours if you have one!) and as a longer layer at the back. Thus getting the best of both worlds – a neat(ish) waist-friendly belted look at the front, showing off nice jeans, and a casual layered look at the back. I went a couple sizes up so I’d have the length and also the comfort to layer over a warm black wool fitted top to keep warm.

A great alternative to my standard wooly jumper winter look. With vest beneath my two layers, cosy as can be and we shot this the day the temperature plummeted below zero! And of course, to make the most out of the sweet peplum shape, wearing with skinnies in a second look…
