Is a simple life boring? That wonderful Jane Birkin quote – “But who wants an easy life? It’s boring!” – and how I love it! But maybe simple dressing allows you to get on with the actual living? It takes time to nail the style you love, until it begins to feel like second nature. But once you do…
Then the real business of living can be got to! But to make that point easier to get to, in collaboration with the brilliant TOMS (who, for every pair of shoes sold, a pair is donated to a someone in need; I bought two pairs when they first launched in 2006!) I’m taking one of my everyday looks and deconstructing the outfit piece by piece.
Often the things you feel most comfortable in are the tried and tested, some pieces you had forever or something new you’ve discovered that ticks all the boxes and you know will be a keeper. So let’s look a little closer…
I’m pretty much an espadrille addict as soon as a hint of sun appears and I wore my first pairs of TOMS to death! Absolutely loving the elegant looks of the new Deconstructed Alpargata. The black pair come in suede and are so comfy you feel like you’re bouncing along in them.
For me, being pretty much a daily jeans wearer, the jeans are usually where I start with an outfit. And now that non-stretch jeans are the norm and easy to get hold of in mid-waist flattering but, comfy styles, life has become so much easier. I tend to snap up straight styles in petite as soon as they become available. And as you know, I chop and grate the hems!
I had the most wonderful vintage argyle knit that I lost last year, so was thrilled to be able to replace it with this gorgeous one by this independent London knitwear designer. A chunky cream knit is such a wardrobe staple and such a no-brainer with black leather and blue denim.
When you find the right leather jacket for you, you just know. I’ve had this reworked vintage one for nearly two years now and no others come close! It’s softened so perfectly over time and I love the slightly oversized shoulders. I pretty much always take it when I travel.
As you probably know, I am a bucket bag obsessive – mainly because the flat bottom is so good for carrying cameras but also just because I love the way they look. I’m pretty boring when it comes to bag colours, I’m pretty much shades of tan all the way. I love natural looking leather and how it scratches up.
Like with bags, I’m pretty predictable when it comes to sunglasses – tortoiseshell all the way! And again, when I find a pair I like I tend to wear them on repeat, lose and find on repeat and through regular use and living, ahem, get them all scratched up. But like cameras, that’s how I like them!
This post created in collaboration with TOMS – all opinions and styling my own as ever.
