Introducing Hub Shop Online, Stoke Newington

Stylonylon | Hub Shop | Stoke NewingtonLiving perilously close to the quite wonderful Hub boutique in Stoke Newington has been very much a delight (read; convenient excuse for treats to self!) over the years we’ve lived in neighbouring Clapton E5…

A brisk 15 minute from home, just opposite Wholefoods, I have many a time found an excuse to pop in and explore the brilliant selection of chic but wearable pieces and often, ahem, found an excuse to buy something!

Stocked with just the kind of brands I would choose myself, if I ever had a shop! Hallo Ganni, Samsoe & Samsoe, Veja (I am obsessed with these hi-tops!), Folk and Kate Sheridan – and always a great new discovery to be found, eg. on my recent trip – Vagabond and Kings of Indigo.

On that last visit, just a couple of weeks ago, I also finally met the lovely sister team – Lou Power and Georgie Cook – behind the womenswear boutique (they also have a menswear shop just across the road, at 88 Stoke Newington Church Street) and had a great chat over peppermint tea before choosing a couple of favourite pieces to style up. Enjoy the interview – there are some great shopping tips from Lou and Georgie too!

The Interview

Hub Shop Lou Power & Georgie Cook

Hub sisters Georgie (left) & Lou (right) both wearing new season Allsea knits!

How did Hub come about?

Lou had started a small Hub in Manchester while I (Georgie) was living in Stoke Newington and saw potential for a Hub in the neighbourhood – back at our family home for Christmas over a couple of glasses of wine, we joined forces and the rest is history!

What were you both doing before?

Lou has a ceramics degree from art school and came to Manchester where she managed a small design shop and got the bug! And I (Georgie) travelled the world as a British Airways long haul flight attendant, produced three children and having 10 years out of my career, decided to change track and opened Stoke Newington Hub with Lou on 15th June 2002.

What types of brands do you stock and what guides your aesthetic?

Brands we love include small independents – British and Scandi brands. We love a clean, simple aesthetic, with quality fabrics and great design. We love brands with a strong identity – trend led but not trend driven, that are totally wearable and accessible. We have a love for amazing fabrics, good honest design with a cool edge, vintage inspired with a modern twist!

How would you describe your styles?

Lou: Relaxed, tomboy and girly, achieving a balance between masculine and feminine – old vintage jeans with great knitwear.

Georgie: Easy, pared down wardrobe, a tomboy with a twist! Loving colour this season, with my winter whites!

What roles do each of you take?

Together we are a team. We do everything together: buying, styling, creating our in-house label Allsea! Running our two amazing stores and website; we love to be on the shop floor with our customers but there is a lot to achieve behind the scenes. Lou has more of a creative vibe and I’m (Georgie) have a more organised paper workhead!

Hub is always bustling when I visit! What are your customers loving right now?

It’s a fantastic season! This season our customers are loving colourful knitwear and Rototo socks, relaxed corduroy, Veja trainers, cosy Portuguese Flannel shirts for guys and for the girls cool dresses from Ganni.

What pieces are you loving right now?

Georgie: Kings of Indigo Leila jeans, Lucius for boys (my partner looks amazing in them and has not taken them off!).

More Kings of Indigo – Estefany top in white linen, so 70s boho! Farzin corduroy jacket in apple blossom and Sabina knit in off white with an amazing super size sleeve.

Lou: Kings of Indigo Alice denim in light vintage, Allsea Viv mohair knit in winter white, Samsoe Ditte jacket in oversized 90s check, Vagabond boots – a nod to cowboy but not the full cowboy! My partner loves his Universal Works uniform shirt in red needle cord (soft and very wearable) and his Lee loose jean in twilight.

Three best autumn purchases?

1. Libertine race coat in black/grey check, ticks all the boxes for this season’s coat.

2. Allsea Viv mohair knit in any colour, rocks a 90s grunge beautifully.

3. Fracap boots for both guys and girls, amazing heritage Italian boots, bespoke to our store. The walking boot done!

And for guys…

1. Portuguese Flannel shirts, beautifully  made in Portugal and wonderfully cosy.

2. Fracap boots as above.

3. Corduroy everywhere!

The Outfit

I teamed the stunning double-breasted melange check coat from Samsoe & Samsoe with an Allsea grey lambswool knit, perfectly cut around the neck and sleeves. (Allsea is the sisters’ in-house brand, made in Scotland). It felt right to style these key pieces with basics of blue denim and black boots and a structured bag thrown into the mix!

You can shop the boutique over on and follow on Instagram @hubshop_online. Also I love this 70s Edit for Guys on their blog!
