Small Independents To Shop From During Covid-19

The news cycle has been moving so fast these past few weeks and in the last couple it’s become clear that 1) many retail businesses are closing down altogether 2) many large retailers dependant on large warehouses are not adequately providing or are able to provide safe working conditions for their staff and so should be avoided and 3) many small businesses are going to be struggling to make ends meet…

For the moment, Royal Mail and courier companies are still operating and in some cases are adapting practice to create safer procedures for staff & clients – eg DHL no longer requires a signature but a photograph.

Recipients of parcels can play their part at the end of the chain by either 1) leaving cardboard boxes for 24 hours before unpacking or 2) unpacking with gloves and/or use a disinfectant spray while doing so. It depends on the lengths with which you feel comfortable!

It’s worth bearing in mind that the virus load on a package exterior that has been sitting unattended for a while will be much less than someone sneezing in your face – this article here from the Guardian is quite good on the virus on surfaces details.

So, the brands I have collated here for you are ones that I know well through my Instagram community, who I have noticed and have heard from that are still happily & safely selling (ie. many of the smaller companies are one person with a room of stock sending out via mail). Also, I saw this piece in Elle came out on the same topic, and they’ve included 100 businesses to shop from, so you can go take a look at that too!

Anyway, here’s my edit and with a little spotlight on brands I’ve been wearing this week! And rather than make it all about fashion, I’ve included a lifestyle and beauty edit too…

Also a shoutout to the Instagram businesses who got in touch after I had put the collage edits together, go have a peek at their lovely wears: Alison Walsh Jewellery, Esotic Jewellery and Margot & Lux Vintage.

Second Female dress from Darling & Gold | A.P.C. knit | Tada & Toy earrings

Castaner espadrilles | Mimi Berry bag

Darling & Gold is one of my favourite Clapton boutiques stocking some great Scandi brands as well as a curated lifestyle collection and Holly is currently offering 40% off with letsgetreal40 – so yes go look! I love this Second Female dress and now that Spring is coming, hard to resist…

I think you all know my soft spot for Mimi Berry (my very first London paycheck went on one of Mimi’s beautiful vegetable tanned leather bags back in the early 2000s!) and I am very much in love with her Spring ’20 collection, in particular the exquisite frame bag, Edith – and there’s 15% off Spring collection until Tuesday.

There are so many wonderful small jewellery businesses out there and I love the simple shape of these just released new Hibernation hoops from Tada & Toy, perfect for a sweet Spring look.

And it’s always worth remembering that Farfetch is a collective of international small boutiques who they are continuing to champion through this time – you cab shop their #supportboutiques 25% discount here and my two picks are these timeless Castaner espadrilles and  APC sweater – both new season.

Lost In Scent candle | Hilary Grant beanie | Workshop Living coffee brewer | Tiana Jewel crystal ring | The Small Home slides | Sessions & Co mug | Heather McDermott studs

Candles are key to setting a better mood for me, and I’m a big fan of Lost In Scent’s cute little screwtop jars & loving the refreshed labels – handpoured, parabens free, 100% soy with cotton wicks and blended essential oils.

I’m quite attached to my winter beanies (and up here in still-wintry Scotland, they’re still necessary!) and when you find one that’s the right shape for you, you never look back; love this light grey one from Hilary Grant  (orders currently being sent out every Tuesday).

Workshop Living – another lovely Instagram find for me – has so many lovely homewares but the one that really jumped out at me is this pour-over ceramic cup (which can sit directly on top of a mug or pot); this method really does make the most delicious cuppa!

Also a great mood-soother is rose quartz and Tiana Jewel specialises in crystal jewellery – this gorgeous ring is just calling out to me!

I’m a big The Small Home devotee, as you probably know! Founder Ayshea has the most exquisite taste – and her recent footwear addition are these leather slides which come in an array of colours & shearling lined too, heaven!

Sessions & Co have some very elegant homeware – check out the cushions – and I love the Emily Sutton picture alphabet cup, definitely one for the collection.

And finally, I’m very taken by these sweet little barrel studs by Skye jewellery maker Heather McDermott, very covetable!

Pai Hand Sanitizer Gel | Batch #001 Bath Soak | Disciple Miracle Drops

| Dr Hauschka Oil Serum | Bramley hand wash

Self-care feels more important that ever right now; staying well and healthy physically always equates to a good mental state of mind for me.

I was so thrilled to see one of my all-time favourite beauty brands Pai immediately turn their attention to manufacturing and distributing to local care homes & hospitals their own hand sanitizer gel – which you can now buy direct from their site for £9, and each one purchased will be one gifted to an NHS worker (shipping from April 7).

And for a by the sink handwash (and handcreams too!), Bramley’s lavender & essential oils mix is a wonderfully natural and effective option and they have a great kids range too…!

Regular evening baths are a great de-stresser for me, just as good as an hour’s massage if done right! My best luxury treat at the moment is the lavender & tea-tree Bath Soak by Batch #001 – a single inhale before you scatter a small amount of salts in is the perfect mood-resetter.

The perfect precursor to a few CBD Miracle Drops by Disciple – having tried several CBD oils, this remains a firm favourite. And I’m loving the evolution of the Disciple range which now includes this Vitamin C Juicy Serum – I’m using this most nights now to really juice up my skin for the morning!

I wouldn’t say my skin breaks out in stressful times, but it does seem to get a little drier (or maybe that’s just age!) but I’m absolutely hooked on the new regenerating range from Dr Hauschka and the oil serum is incredibly nourishing and really sinks in.

Vague Bag, Elleme & Masks for Hospitals

I’m a big fan of Elleme and their affordable luxe range of bags – their early designs caught many an eye! And I was so happy to be able to buy one of the 20 Vague bags this week (now all sold!) from which full proceeds have gone from each purchase to buy 10,000 masks for hospitals in need. Each buyer was able to choose a hospital to donate to – mine went to an Italian hospital in Brescia, Lombardy. This is a fantastic initiative and it looks like Elleme will be going forward with similar projects – so do keep an eye on their @elleme Stories.

Georgia Hardinge Dazed Dress & Age UK

This week Georgia Hardinge (a wonderfully unique fashion brand) has responded to Age UK’s emergency appeal with 50% of the sustainable Dazed dress range to be donated. You can take part by using my code STYLONYLON15 for 15% off – I’m wearing the Ivory Dazed dress and you can see the full range here. This code is valid for the next two months.

How I’m Wearing Matthew Calvin

And finally… Matthew Calvin is one of my longterm favourite jewellery brands (I interviewed Matthew in his east London studio quite a few years ago now!) and they have done a little interview with me on working from home. I will pop the link up on Stories next week, but in the meantime here’s how I’ve been wearing some of their sweet little earrings!
