Number two for my weekly portrait project is another selfie…
There’s been a lot of chat online recently about selfies – mainly derisory, the idea being that taking photos of yourself and posting them online is outta this world egotistical. I guess it is to an extent, but I’m not sure it’s anything to feel ashamed of. If you can take a pleasing photo, if only to you, then I don’t see any harm in that. I don’t think it’s too annoying and showy-offy. I also truly believe you can be your own best subject and also probably the only uncomplaining one. Anyway, the high-minded art of self portraits or the less highly-esteemed selfie of the internet age are pretty much the one and the same. If your results are annoying to people – I’ve seen a lot of backlash against so-called ‘duck-faced’ pouts which seem to rile people no end – then you’ll have to deal with the fall-out, and if not, well, well done! Keep going. For me, this portrait is the first properly sunny afternoon of spring, the sun was beaming over the trees into our little garden and it felt blissful on my skin. Closing my eyes to drink it up and drift off somewhere special.
