For Valentine’s (not being that big on it really – a home-cooked meal, favourite novel and flowers, please!) I asked three of my favourite fashion editors what book they would gift to a loved one. First up is The Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley…
The book: For Kings and Planets by Ethan Canin
Jess says: I love Pride & Prejudice as much as the next girl but it is a truth universally acknowledged that boys don’t do Austen. Canin is a wonderful writer and this book is not as famous as it should be. Richard Ford, Curtis Sittenfield, Richard Yates, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Donna Tartt – all those are great writers that can get passed from one side of a double bed to the other. The book doesn’t need to be romantic – it’s the fact of sharing your taste in fiction that’s intimate, I think. @jessC_M

I say: Totally brilliant to discover a novelist and novel I hadn’t heard of – thank you Jess! Just when you think you’ve read it all (I was a huge bookworm as a child and still try to read as much as I can now!), you suddenly realise – of course! – there’s always more to discover… Can’t wait to get going on this one.
Next in the Love Letters Valentine’s mini series: Pandora Sykes, fashion features editor at The Sunday Times Style…
