I first discovered London jeweller Matthew Calvin in the brilliant, and near to me, Triangle Store (homeware, jewellery and clothes) on Chatsworth Road. I bought four of Matthew’s super minimalist light-weight ring in both silver and rose gold…
I since found out more from online stockist Magpie on the Run – I wear the dot ring practically every day – and can’t get enough of his geometric inspired shapes and eye-catching glass tube packaging. Last month I went to visit Matthew and his team in his Shoreditch studio to find out more… Here are five things you should know:
From womenswear to jewellery
Matthew studied womenswear at London College of Fashion but by the time he was finished he was so sick of sewing machines he joined his mother in making beaded jewellery before studying at the London Jewellery School.
Inspiration
His first collection, all handmade, launched in 2013 was based on triangles – inspiration for future collections has come from shapes and architecture – and he first sold his pieces in places like Not On The Highstreet and Etsy. Now you can find his collections in Fenwicks and Wolf & Badger.
Multi-lingual
Matthew grew up in Barcelona where he still often visits and speaks both Spanish and Portuguese.
Personal jewellery style
Matthew himself wears three of his own rings: three silver point rings (one of the first pieces he made) stacked together.
Exciting things to come
This spring Matthew is launching his jewellery into 37 Belgium and Netherlands stores called Friday – super exciting!
