A few weeks ago I popped down to the Kate Sheridan boutique in Clapton for a make your own handbag evening event! My DIY skills having recently extended to making a spoon (!) I was excited to give this a try. Run by Kate and the lovely Ida, it was an evening full of laughs, chatting, chocolate brownies and our very own Hex bag.
[ezcol_1half]We started a few steps in, with cut-out leather templates (thanks ladies!) so our first job was choosing our colours for the bag and straps. This took longer than you would think@ Though predictably I went with shades of tan – see my final here! The other girls attending were a bit more adventurous and combined pink and black and metallics. First step was to make all the requisite holes in the straps and then carefully paint the sides of the straps to match the front. Sounds so quick as written, actually it took ages! All so painstakingly careful to get it right… [/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]Next we scoured the leather pieces where the folds needed to be and then did the trickiest bit by far bit, which was using screws to attach the loop at the front – it took a two handed manoeuvre to secure two screws and backs in the right place and we all toiled getting this right. After that we weaved in the leather length holding the bag together (such a clever design!) and then added on the strap. It was a unbelievable delight to complete the bag, we were all filled with such pride! Hugely recommended, for yourself or as a gift for keen makers! [/ezcol_1half_end]
The next ‘Make Your Own Hex Bag’ is 6th December!
