Levi’s Blogger Challenge – Channelling The T-Birds

Levi's Blogger Challenge – Modern Frontier

I remember my first pair of 501s like it was yesterday. I was 12 and desperate for a pair of ‘real’ jeans. There was something about the way the button fly and waist gathered that I just had to have in my life…

Fast forward to the present and I have to admit my Levi’s habit petered out somewhere in my late teens (but a habit it was, at least three different colours of the same style!) and I discovered other brands and other fits and yet I kept wondering what a pair of classic 501s on me would be like now. Not stretchy, not skintight, not prone to puckering or wearing at the knees, just top quality denim with just the right amount of distressing. And then this style challenge came along. Levi’s has asked bloggers to reinterpret the looks of their favourite style icons with items from their current Icons collection as part of their Modern Frontier campaign.

I yelped with delight when my pair of updated and tailored Pioneer 501s arrived. The perfect faded blue in the perfect boyfriend style with the cutest little tear at the bottom of the left hand pocket. Levi’s also goes all the way down to a size 24, but I’m probably more of a 25 these days and I have to say it’s the most comfortable fit. The kind of fit you can wear around the house all day long. The waist sits perfectly just on my hips and fans out loosely but not too baggy – the cool shape and style is retained.

So who’s the style icon behind this look? Well, thinking the fifties, James Dean and plaid shirts my mind immediately leapt to one of the most defining and pivotal movies of every girl child of the 80s, Grease! But instead of going all Sandy on you, I wanted to keep to my current tomboy theme and go all John Travolta as Danny Zuko instead. Danny Zuko, head of the T-Birds, in tight black t-shirts, loose jeans and plaid shirts when off duty; actually the image I have in mind is a sans black leather jacket Kenickie, looking ever so cool.

I decided to tie the shirt around my waist after loving the look on Emilie from Lovaine during our Company fashion shoot and to give this outfit my modern day twist and iconic style blogger edge, I chose my highest pair of vintage YSL heels. I love the way brown leather goes with denim. I should also mention that I shot these photos the same day as the Company shoot while still wearing make-up by Sophie Higginson, who did the most brilliant job at a natural but enhanced face. What do you think of the look? Do you have any denim specific style icons? And how would you style boyfriend jeans?
