Earlier this year, I was introduced to US brand Eileen Fisher at a press day. I was instantly seduced by the casual chic pieces (so Isabel Marant!) and even more impressed by the quality…
So when I was asked if I’d like to have a proper look through the AW13 collection and style up some looks, I jumped at the chance. With so many gorgeous pieces to choose from, I decided to do a mini-series of three posts, starting here with two casual looks based featuring these two wardrobe staple sweaters, a charcoal stretch knit in stripes and a grey sheer fine knit jumper (£210, available in store at Covent Garden, Marylebone High Street & Wimbledon Village).
I have to admit these two sweaters are the kind of basics I’ve always craved but never managed to actually find. Yes, these are more than I would usually think to spend, but having tried them on I can tell you they are proper investment pieces that you will have in your wardrobe for quite a while. And the kind of pieces you will go back to again and again, pulling them out without even thinking to make up a relaxed day outfit.
I love a dark grey and all too often, it gets pushed aside for black. I’ve built on the charcoal by teaming with a pair of dark denim jeans with turn ups, which is such a lovely autumn colour combination. This type of ballet neck is so flattering too (I’m wearing an XS). Clogs and bag in light nudes lift the look up and add a bit of in-the-know styling, but both are super easy-going choices – comfortable shoes for nipping about and the handiness of a crossbody bag. This is a great look that I would wear any day of the week for popping out for errands or meeting a friends for coffee or lunch. It’s extremely toddler friendly too, which is an added bonus.
Wearing Eileen Fisher sweater, Wallis petite jeans*, Swedish Hasbeens clogs (love this new style!) & Sophie Hulme mini envelope bag.
Grey is perfect for autumn and I think it’s a nice idea to layer shades of colour. This is a fine knit with diagonal detailing and an asymmetric cut makes it a lot more interesting than your average grey sweater. I know grey jeans had their moment a few years ago at the height of Kate Moss’s rock chick journey, but I always kept a favourite pair in my wardrobe as an alternative to blue and black denim. Again, I’ve added a handy daytime bag and a failsafe pair of ankle boots (regular readers will have seen both of these numerous times before!). I’m really pleased that the Eileen Fisher pieces have fitted so seamlessly into my wardrobe and this look is perfect weekday style for me – a definite go-to for speedy dressing in the morning!
Wearing Eileen Fisher grey knit (in store only), Diesel jeans via TK Maxx, Hudson Encke boots and Village England bag*.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these two looks! One of best things about blogging has been discovering great new brands and being able to share my favourite finds. What do you think of these sweaters and how I’ve styled them? For my next Eileen Fisher post I’ll be styling up two smart day looks, so stayed tuned!

Hey Julia
Great post! Love the stripes, defo going on my next purchase list for sure! Just wondered what colour your Encke boots are? I can’t seem to find any like it? Only black (coal) and beige/brown etc.
Many thanks!

Hi Tee
Yes, these ones are brown leather, but I’ve had a look online and they don’t seem to do these exact ones anymore – the closest are these brown suede ones I think
