One of our favourite things to do in the Algarve is drive to the Tavira waterside and take the little mini train to the Praia do Barril sand split beach…
Close to to the village Pedras D’el Rei, you park up on the Santa Luzia M1347 road and then cross the little foot bridge to catch the train. They seem to run every 2o minutes or so and tickets are just a few Euros. It’s so much fun for kids and adults alike and when you arrive you can head to the ‘complex’ as I like to call – couple of cafes, shops for beach stuff and loos – before hitting the beach.
The day we went wasn’t exactly ideal beach weather. May in the Algarve this year was unseasonally stormy and wet, so instead with had a bit of a blustery beach walk after lunch in awe of the amazing graveyard of huge metal anchors.
As you can see from the intense clouds hanging above the sand, a storm was clearly brewing! Luckily we made it home before the rain started, the kids suitably full of fresh air and tired out. Enjoy the many pics! A few more things to do in the Algarve coming up – including amazing restaurant Lagar Mesquita, Purobeach at Tivoli Hotel in Vilamoura and the Sao Bras de Alportel costume museum…

Went there many years ago by train from Lisboa and coincidentally was talking to a colleague about Tavira only yesterday – I would love to go back and take my teen daughter. Fabulous place.
Ah yes! Such a good family trip :))
Thank you, I’ve been waiting impatiently for your Algarve posts! I’m so excited to read your next few posts. We are heading back to Sao Bras in August and I can’t wait to try your recommendations.
Those photos are stunning. Gorgeous memory making.
Thanks Sue! It really was a lovely time despite the weather! :))
