Looking back, it was bound to happen – our obsession with all things basket bags evolving into luxe quality pieces (read more expensive lol!) which are seeing this Spring welcome in a whole load of new posh market bags…

Rewind to when you realised that brilliant basket you bought from an Formentera market about a decade ago was bang on and you could proudly tote it, scoring fashion points left right and centre! And there were loads of places – Trouva, Etsy and Edit 58 – where you could pick up a whole range of designs (and still can!).

And then in the blink of an eye the contemporary designer reworks – hallo Muun bags, this one please! – with their pretty little linings and eye-catching fabric handles.

Of course I started to explore and fell upon the lovely Fonott wicker willow basket with rotating handles and woven leather Dragon bags worn by the Olsen twins – I bought mine from French market site Le Bazaristain but they’re now available on Net-A-Porter.

And then things got serious with Loewe’s super luxe versions – see the new slouchy shopping bag, perfect for rolling up in your suitcase – and the whole basket trend cranked up a notch, ready to take a hit on your wallet. And the latest mini version is just as desirable (10% off at MyTheresa with code WELCOME btw), but I think the Hereu has a bit of an edge with its slightly less-than-perfectly placed leather handles. Plus it comes with a long strap and sits at just the right place on the hip. The rest of the Hereu designs really are worth checking out – the gorgeous cut-out leather tote is inspired and the buyers at Liberty have zeroed in on the sweet raffia & canvas checkerboard bucket, see them in the bag hall!

Well I’ve been and am there for it all! It’s a laidback look I love and goes really crazy well with the casual looks I like to wear. And now we’re being shown all sort of lovely ideas – from small understated woven buckets, to some look-at-me embellished straw totes, raffia shopping bags – there’s also this crazy Gucci one! – beaded totes and, this has to be my fave; the spruced up macrame tote bags, a perfect mix of elegant and cool and next on my list!
